The Filth and the Fury of Francz V

Odd images and sketchbook scans by illustrator / artist / designer Francz V.

For every one really finished looking thing that winds up on my blog, there's a hundred rough sketches, abandoned concepts and odd doodles.

This is the place where these pieces live....

Here’s a cartoon I did as a joke for someone special.

I did this in ball point pen and sharpie, coloured and beaten in Photoshop, the week that Dr. Hunter S. Thompson died. I felt the medium was appropriate.

If you’re going to be crazy, you have to get paid for it or else you’re going to be locked up. Hunter S. Thompson

Well here’s me getting all nostalgic….
From 1996 to 2001 CHV.net was the all time coolest console gaming website ever. Pre youTube and pre broadband, it served as the home for gamers world wide and presented regualr shows on games, tips, full motion cutscenes and a highlight, a show called Sh#t Talks, where the two hosts, Bo and Leo used to duke it out (usually in Tekken Tag Tournament) and trash talk the entire time.
Aside from the outstanding content, diverse community, high production standards (Bo and Leo were genuinely great hosts and aside from their farewell video, only ever appeared in voice over), the site actually looked cool.
There was a genuinely cool vibe to the whole thing.
Then one day, they shut down…
A friend of mine, let’s call him Steve got involved with a couple of other former members to build a mark II version of the site (which tanked as he wound up being the only person who actually did any work), another former member set up a message board, but he was a right geek causing the board to rapidly descended into geek city and became a very closed shop and now nobody posts there at all.
I designed three CHV2 logos for Steve. Pictured in the top left is the original CHV logo. With my efforts to the bottom and right of the original, well now all I have is memories and three unused logo designs…enjoy!

The computer can’t tell you the emotional story. It can give you the exact mathematical design, but what’s missing is the eyebrows. Frank Zappa
Idea for a robots/cthulhu/war story, got a bunch of rough thumbnails and a tentative start on page 1 of the thing. This will definitely get a resurrection one of these days, but we’ll have to see when I can get around of it.

A rough idea for a t-shirt, or maybe a sticker. Might revist this one…

a bunch of doodles I did on an old blotter. Many phone conversations and idle hands went into their development.
